“Powered by such hits as “A Milli” and “Lollipop,” Lil’ Wayne showed, and proved, the reason hip hop isn’t dead.”

By John Charles Reedburg
Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Hanukah to you and your family. In this week’s column we’ll take a trip through the year that was 2008 and count down the top 10 HOTTEST HIP-HOP MOMMENTS of the past year.

10. Rick Ross Gets Exposed… Rick Ross found himself in a bit of controversy this year when rumors implying the Florida native was a corrections officer prior to his dabble in hip hop began to swirl. After vehemently denying the rumors, even in the face of a photo from his 9-to-5 days, the “15 for a key” rapper was eventually proven to have actually been just what everyone suspected…a fraud!

Prior to this story, Ross would repeatedly rhyme about his drug-dealing past and call himself a “real” individual. The problem was he forgot to mention his law enforcement back-ground. As I mentioned this year, it was not a foul the man worked as a corrections officer; the foul was he attempted to cover it up by lying. Whatever the case, Rick Ross comes in at this year’s No. 10 spot of Ya Heard’s Top 10 Hip-Hop Moments of 2008.

9. Down Goes Knight… Rocka bye baby is exactly what Suge Knight did when he was dropped outside a Los Angeles nightclub earlier this year. The most-feared man in hip hop was leveled by a man named “Greg the Barber” during an altercation outside the club. After building his rep as a Blood gang member, bullying the likes of Vanilla Ice, and being the head of the most-feared record label in history, Death Row, Suge met his match this past summer while enjoying a night of drinking and dancing.

Even with the one loss on Suge’s record, I dare any of you to go test him…Rocka bye baby…
8. Remy Ma Finds a New Home… Remy Ma brought in the New Year by being on trial for shoot-ing her one-time BFF twice in the stomach. Following an argument over missing money, the “ride or die” chick of the new millennium decided to keep it a little too real in her at-tempt to account for the missing funds.

During the trial, Remy seemed to be the only one to not fully understand what was going on. She paraded herself in front of the courthouse and tried to pull the superstar-leaving-court routine while taking pictures with photographers! In the end, the Big Pun protégé stood visibly shaken as she was sentenced to eight years in New York’s Riker’s Island Penitentiary.

7. Facemob Leaves the Game… Face said goodbye to hip hop late this year, following the release of his most recent production, Emeritus. Now people always announce their retirements and never actually do it, but there’s something about Face that makes me believe this dude is for real. Arguably the realest guy to touch a microphone, Face has built a career off being the man next door. His 20-plus contribution to the game will always keep Scarface as one of the dopest emcees in the game…ever. Facemob!

6. Young Buck Vents! This year we heard one of the hardest men in hip-hop music cry on the telephone. The problem is he was venting to someone that was a little harder and more cold-blooded than he. After being disbanded from his G-Unit membership, Buck went on to talk reck-lessly about the man who put him on MTV, 50 Cent.
Following a few warnings, 50 went on to release a taped phone conversation of Young Buck emotionally telling 50 his life problems. Yeah, 50 may have been wrong for doing that, but hey, anything goes in love and war.

5. Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige Hit the Road… Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige got together this year to bring us the Heart of the City Tour. While the concept of the tour made perfect sense, the actual show didn’t live up to expectations.

There was clearly not enough room for both of them on one stage. They separated their time into two separate halves, only serving to tease the audience.
Nevertheless, it was good to see a major hip-hop concert in the Verizon Center for the first time in a long time.

4. T.I. Leaves Paper Trail Blazing… While it didn’t start off the most anticipated album of the year, T.I.’s latest album, “Paper Trail,” was certainly the album of the year. With hits such as “Still I Stand,” “Live Your Life,” and the catchy-hooked “Whatever You Like,” T.I. officially became a household name in 2008.

3. Shawty Lo vs. T.I. … After becoming redundant and boring over the last few years, hip-hop beefs saw a spike in action after Shawty Lo decided to throw some darts at his crosstown neme-sis T.I. Amid challenging T.I.’s authenticity as a rapper, Shawty also went on to claim the Bankhead, Atlanta emcee wasn’t actually from Bankhead!
Following a swift verbal lashing from T.I., and the rest of Atlanta for that matter, Shawty was forced to chalk the entire incident up as a “miscommunication” and bite his tongue.
Long live the King…

2. Lil’ Wayne Sells A Milli in One Week! In a downright rotten economy, Lil’ Wayne and his Cash Money clique created such an anticipation for his album, “The Carter III,” that fans pulled from their pockets to help Wayne go platinum in one week.
Powered by such hits as “A Milli” and “Lollipop,” Lil’ Wayne showed, and proved, the reason hip hop isn’t dead.

1. Hip Hop Ba racks the Vote! Hip Hop and young people across the nation jumped on the tail of the first black president-elect of the United States this year. With artists and fans making voting the cool thing to do, hip-hop fans showed up in record numbers to make a dream reality.

As shown throughout this article, the closer you get the top of the list, the more this statement becomes true… enough said… Happy Holidays!
