a superhero in his own right
“The comic, a special inauguration issue, will feature an alternative cover with Barack Obama having his picture taken by Spidey.”
By John Charles Reedburg
Beware … it’s the neighborhood Obama man! LOL!
During the presidential campaign, BARACK OBAMA sparked some creative juices over at Marvel Comics when he revealed that he’s a Spider-Man man.
The comic book publisher will be cashing in on the combined cultural cache of the president-elect and the New York web-slinger next week when it releases Amazing Spider-Man #583 in comic shops around the country. The comic, a special inauguration issue, will feature an alternative cover with Barack Obama having his picture taken by Spidey.
The likeness is spot-on, even if his hair is looking more salt-and-pepper these days than the jet black on the cover.
Say what you will of this little stunt. Yes, it’s opportunistic. Yes, it’s a publicity stunt. But I like that it commemorates an admitted comic book fan taking the highest office in the land. It’s worth noting here, that Obama’s FCC transition team is co-chaired by an active World of Warcraft gamer: Kevin Werbach. So hooray for nerds.
In an extra Spider-Man story in the upcoming issue, Peter Parker is taking pictures of the president-elect when he notices an Obama double. Sensing trouble, he switches into his Spider-Man outfit and saves Obama from the devious doppelganger.
Now maybe Obama can repay Marvel the compliment by creating the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division, better known as S.H.I.E.L.D.
