but will it be worth the wait?
“He’s anxious, he’s excited, he’s still got the same fire if he’s not on the floor”
By Daniel Eade
Boston Celtics guard Ray Allen has described Kevin Garnett as “Anxious,” and refused to rule out the possibility of the 7’0” power forward making a surprise return to uniform for Saturday’s do-or-die game seven against the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the 2009 NBA playoffs.
Garnett has not played since March 25th, after playing through four games after returning from a knee injury sustained on February 19th, KG was closed up and expected to miss the remainder of the post-season.
With the series growing into an instant classic and already being touted as the greatest ever by many, Chicago held on at home in game six on Thursday night to defeat the visiting Celtics, 128-127 in triple-overtime, levelling the series up at 3-3.
It was the fourth game so far this series to be determined by extra-time.
Despite a career-playoff high 51 points from Allen, the Celtics failed to capitalise on a potential game winner in the final seconds when point guard Rajon Rondo has his shot rejected by rookie-of-the-year winner and Bulls counterpart Derrick Rose, setting up the highly anticipated final game in Boston.
When asked about the possibility of Garnett suiting up for G7, Allen noted, “I don’t know anything. I see Kev everyday, I know he gets his workouts in.”
.
“He’s anxious, he’s excited, he’s still got the same fire if he’s not on the floor, but that would be a decision, one he would just have to say, ‘I’m ready to get up and do it,’ but as far as what I know, everything is what it is. I see him being in a suit which I don’t like.”
Garnett’s absence on the playing roster has been a massive setback for the Celtics, and despite the stand-out play from his replacement in the starting line-up, Glen Davis, Boston were crucified late when Davis and starting centre Kendrick Perkins were forced to become spectators after fouling out during the extra periods. The C’s left to rely on Brian Scalabrine and Miki Moore for an interior presence.
In 57 games this season, Garnett averaged 15.8ppg and 8.5rpg.
Despite the high unlikeliness of Garnett returning, it’s a 50/50 situation.
He either will or he won’t.
