To plea or not to plea ... is a question that always confuses me! LOL!

CHRIS BROWN copped a guilty plea for felony assault on Monday — right before his ex-girlfriend RIHANNA was supposed to testify against him!

Chris won’t do any jail time. Instead, he’ll spend 180 days doing manual labor — like picking up garbage — in his home state of Virginia. In addition, he’ll get five years supervised probation and enroll in a domestic violence counseling program.

Rihanna appeared in court Monday in downtown Los Angeles to testify against her ex for attacking her on Feb. 8. But before she could go on the record about the assault — during which Chris punched her so many times her mouth filled with blood, per the police notes — Chris’ lawyer, Mark Geragos, worked out a deal to prevent the case from going to trial.

As part of Chris’ plea bargain, he is required to stay away from the Barbadian beauty.
