HOTT AND RAW EXCLUSIVE!

My mama said always fake it, until you make it. A lot of people don’t know that I slept in my car.

Fresh off of his latest movie “Sympathy for Delicious” (2009 – Directed by Mark Ruffalo. Starring opposite Orlando Bloom, Mark Ruffalo, and Juliette Lewis) and a EURWEB Awards nomination for “Most Media Friendly Celebrity,” actor / comedian WILLIE MACC, has quickly come a long way as a member of young hollywood since first becoming known as a series regular on BET’s “College Hill: Virgin Islands” a little over a year ago. He’s appeared on the big screen as a “yo-mama joke cracking” opponent of the Spartan army in the winter 2008 theatrical release of “Meet the Spartans”, and in the direct to home entertainment release, “House Arrest”, where he takes on the Chris Tucker-like side-kick role in the “Friday” like comedy. He can be seen in the 2009 Cedric the Entertainer’s directorial debut, “Chicago Pulaski Jones” and in a recurring role in the upcoming television show “Friends and Lover: Ski Trip 2″. He was also just recently named the National Spokesperson for Living Advantage, Inc, a non-profit organization focused on the plight of foster youth.

In this HOTT AND RAW EXCLUSIVE! – Willie Macc talks about life after “College Hill” and the importance of having humility in Hollywood. Willie deems that many people are often misconstrued by the false depictions of how some celebrities are really living in Tinseltown.

After LISTENING TO THE INTERVIEW ABOVE be sure to check below for ways to stay connected and the latest viral videos by Willie.

WHATs HOTT!!! ABOUT WILLIE MACC!?!

His down home brand of genuine humility!

Willie Macc (born Willie McMiller, August 4, 1984) is best known as the funny man from the hit BET Reality TV show, “College Hill Virgin Islands”. He has become one of the few Reality TV stars to make the transition from Reality TV to that of a working actor in Hollywood. The son of Elder Willie McMiller and Minerva McMiller, Willie Macc was born in Seascy, Arkansas and raised in St. Louis, Missouri.

A 2002 graduate of Hazelwood Central High School, he is currently a Marketing major at American InterContinental University in Los Angeles, California. His father, Elder Willie McMiller, is pastor of Brotherly Love Christian Assembly in Jennings. His mother, Minerva McMiller, is an elementary school teacher in the Ferguson-Florissant district. Both still live in suburban St. Louis with Willie Macc’s four brothers – Gabriel(20), John(18), Jarvis (16) and James (8).

In his season of College Hill (Season 4), four students from Los Angeles, and four students from the Virgin Islands lived together while they are taking classes at the University of the Virgin Islands. Filled with the usual fun times, arguments and chaos that a house full of 8 students normal bring, the living situation was pretty much business as usual for him, since he had grew up in a relatively large household. He has had a busy year since his “graduation” from College Hill.

Once he relocated back to Los Angeles from the Virgin Islands, he continued his small screen run by appearing on multiple episodes of CSI, as well as Journeyman, 106th and Park and Take the Cake. He has also appeared in several national and regional commercials including Subway and Taco Bell. Willie Macc’s big screen break came with his cameo appearance in the 2008 comedy spoof “Meet the Spartans” where he played a “Yo Mama” joke cracking opponent of the Spartan army.

willie_chillin

His second film, “House Arrest”, Willie Macc co-stars as the Chris Tucker like side-kick in the “Friday” like direct to video comedy. Cited recently as a “modern day Eddie Murphy”, Willie Macc continues his destiny to stardom when he begins shooting the action / comedy, “Chicago Pulaski Jones” (written by and starring Kel Mitchel of the “Kenan & Kel” show, and directed by Cedric the Entertainer) in March of 2008, and “The Scorpion” and “Hacking Hollywood” in April of 2008. Known for his big afro, the unique retro look made him one of the most recognizable cast members on his season of College Hill. While loved by many industry insiders, his hair also casted some doubt on whether or not the afro is suited for the majority of today’s Hollywood roles.

willie

In November of 2007, after receiving a little pressured by some of those close to him to change his look, Willie Macc decided to leave the fate of his afro up to the public. Fans were allowed to weigh in both by an online poll as well as a text message poll on whether he should “Keep the Fro or Let it Go”. With the results being statically the same (51.5% Keep to 49.5% Let it Go), Willie Macc decided to compromise by keeping it, but cutting it down about 3 inches. Both an actor and comedian, Willie Macc made his first professional stand-up comedy debut at the famous BB Kings at Universal Walk in Los Angeles on July 31, 2007. He continues to hone his comic skills by performing stand-up comedy routines in and around Los Angeles for both teen and adult audiences. A lover of sketch comedy in particular, he has developed a sketch comedy TV pilot with his College Hill cast mate “JayTee”.

A frequent guest on the “red carpets” in LA, Willie Macc has developed a knack for entertaining the media. So much so, BET designated Willie Macc to handle all local Los Angeles press appearances for the first ever BET “College Hill; Class Reunion” show which aired in three different episodes during March of 2008. His increasing popularity will soon expand internationally, with the April 2008 initial airing of College Hill Virgin Islands on the newly launched BET UK network.

re-carpet

Willie Macc is slated to travel to London to help with the promotion of the show and to meet with several European advertisers for celebrity endorsement opportunities. Willie Macc cites Bernie Mac, Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy as his role models. He spells his name with two c’s, so it would not be too confusing with Bernie Mac. But like Bernie Mac, Willie Macc aspires to one day have his own TV show.

[Five years from now] I see myself as one of the best - SWAZY BABY!

SWAZY-POSTER_)1

HOTT AND RAW EXCLUSIVE!

Slip n Slide Records rap newcomer SWAZY BABY is marking new territory and creating that new sound to rap music. Brought up in a less fortunate home, raised by a single mother and determined to provide a way for his family; a raw aptitude that beyond all measures has never failed to embrace his supporters with a smile. Although limited, he found a resource to tap into his musical gift and share his inner most secrets through music and introduce his story of how you can take a bad situation and turn it into a good one. Overcoming struggles and hardship this rapper knows what it takes to undergo hard times, adversity and still come out on top. Aspiring to become a permanent fixture among the rap community; this young multifaceted artist is making it his business to breath “fresh air” into the music industry.

In this HOTT AND RAW EXCLUSIVE!, Swazy talks about the way he injects real life experiences into his music and plans of becoming one of the best artists in the game.

After LISTENING TO THE INTERVIEW ABOVE, check below the latest video, mixtape, and website links for Swazy Baby.

WHATs HOTT!!! ABOUT SWAZY BABY!?!

His understanding of simply making the best out of life!

Born and raised in Cordele, Georgia the young lyricist experienced privation and hardship early on in life, as a teenager; Swazy Baby was shuttled between his mother, grandmother and other relatives. Never the less he forged ahead in spite of his adversities and decided to pursue music as a full time career. Now signed with the Slip n Slide Records All Star team, this nineteen year old is destined nothing short of long term success.

“ I am very happy to be a member of the Slip n Slide Records family, ever since I was a little boy, Slip n Slide has been a major staple in not only the south marker but all over the country.” “I know that with Slip n Slide Records behind me I have a bright future, I plan to bring the heat and create classic timeless rap music, like my rap forefathers Trick Daddy, Jay Z, Nas and more.”

l_9ca53e86bafb409691138b53d

At a first glance Swazy Baby might seem unsuspecting, but his focus is on none other than “banging out the hits” creating good quality rap music, that individuals can appreciate for years to come. “As a rapper from the ghetto, I don’t want to highlight my struggles and upbringings…like other rappers instead I want to rap about working towards the future and showing communities around the world that if you work hard at something, good things will come to you” I am the voice of the hood, I am here to inspire.”

Swazy Baby draws inspiration from rappers such as Lil Wayne, Rick Ross and more. He credits all the musical legends that came before him. “I respect all art. In fact, they all fall under one category if you ask me…poetry. It’s all pure poetry in different forms.” When he’s able to pull himself away from his “poetry”, he enjoys writing and producing music, spending time with his family and seeking ways to improve his “craft “and last but not least ; some quiet time to relax giving him an opportunity to focus and realign with what he calls “my humbled self”.

Their blossoming career!

Vistoso Bosses, comprised of Taylah.P and Kelci, is a high-energy girl group with infectious lyrics and sweet moves to match. “Our music is unique and eclectic, mixed with a little hip-hop,” explains rapper Kelci. Taylah.P, who sings vocals, further expands upon the group’s sound. “We have a new sound. We’re influenced by everyday teen stuff – school, boys, and having fun.”

Vistoso, defined as bright or colorful in the Spanish language, is the perfect adjective for the brilliant twosome. “Anybody can be vistoso,” says Kelci, “We’re all about having our own style.” Taylah.P excitedly agrees, “Most people think we’re all about not matching, but it’s about being yourself. We like being colorful. We wear what we feel.”

Kelci is quick to expand upon her state of bliss as the group celebrates being labelmates with Soulja Boy, Collipark Music’s most successful artist to date. “It feels great to be on one of the hottest record labels out.” Michael “Mr. Collipark” Crooms was introduced to the group by means of the Internet’s social networking magic.

The girls’ homemade videos to their popular debut songs “Delirious” and “Boy Crazy” were instant faves on YouTube and Myspace. “[Delirious] is a happy song,” says Taylah who details how the track came about. “We wrote the song along with St. James, a very talented producer.”

The group has since received the Myspace Artist of the Week accolade due to an overwhelming response from almost one-half million online fans. Mr. Collipark is enthusiastic about the debut of the self-proclaimed Bosses. “These girls are a breath of fresh air for the music industry. They’re positive, bright, and just all around creative,” describes the industry veteran responsible for the recent record-breaking success of Soulja Boy reaching the highest number of digital downloads ever in the history of music.

His assessment of the two as a teen girl-power group makes room for the pair to be artistically free of today’s misogynistic driven culture. “We want to be viewed as role models,” Taylah wholeheartedly explains. “We want to be an inspiration and positive light for girls of all ages.” Their melodious vocals and lovable look make this goal easy to achieve. “Don’t be afraid to be yourself,” both girls advise, “Being different is being cool.”

“I’m not your typical vixen” – JESSENIA VICE!

HOTT RAW AND EXCLUSIVE!

JESSENIA VICE believes that the way she became a model was a mere accident.

Born and raised in New Jersey of Ecuadorian decent. She admits to being a big tomboy who once had a weight problem. Even though she shed the pounds, she has always stayed grounded and kind to the people that have supported her. The passing of Jessenia’s late grandmother inspired her wanting to become a nurse. However, after being contacted by numerous photographers for photo shoots via her MySpace page. Jessenia decided to give modeling a try.

Less than a year later, Low Rider magazine model and Kim Kardashian look-a-like contest winner, Jessenia Vice aka Queen of the Kim knows two things. One, hard work pays off. Two, some accidents are meant to happen.

In this HOTT RAW AND EXCLUSIVE! Jessenia talks about her life as a model and what ways has the death of late grandmother inspired her to carry on.

After LISTENING TO THE INTERVIEW ABOVE, check below for videos of Jessenia and ways to stay connected.

WHATs HOTT!!! ABOUT JESSENIA VICE!?!

Her Learning That Dreams Are More Than What We Envision

“It wasn’t until my grandmother’s death that I decided to become a nurse. It was around that time I created a myspace page which brought many photographers contacting me to shoot with them. I brushed it off for almost 3 years during which I was working at the ER as an LPN nurse. It wasn’t until last summer when I decided to give modeling a shot and I began juggling the two.”

JesseniaVice_pull-down

”So far the modeling world has been good to be, I’ve achieved things I never dreamed of. I have been published in magazines such as the cover of Bactchlor Magazine 08, featured in GIRLS of Lowrider 09, Straight Stuntin 09, and I have recently been on national television with Tyra and Kim Kardashian. My attitude with modeling is to have fun and to help others build their portfolio. There’s so much talent out there, I’m just happy to be a part of it.”

HOTT AND RAW EXCLUSIVE!

Akon’s new talented girl group. Working with Upfront Megatainment CEO Devyne Stephens, is poised to take the music world by storm in a way not evidenced since chart topping TLC. Composed of three equally talented, ambitious and driven young ladies, KRAVE boasts no leader, unlike most female groups. Chanel Ross, Jasmine “Jazzy” Kearse, and Shanquilla “Shan Q” Robinson, can each hold their own in the studio or on stage. As their first single “Up and Down” (featuring Akon, Nelly, and Twista), shows promise of a brighter destiny. These future stars remain grateful and obviously humbled, by their modest upbringings. My overall impression of these girls is best described in three words: FUN! FIERY! FLAVORFUL! As Krave isn’t only a catchy name for a group. It’s also a name that’ll have you coming back for more.

In this HOTT AND RAW EXCLUSIVE! these young ladies talk about future plans for the group and the importance of living their dreams as recording artist.

VERSE SIMMONDS! ON THE ROAD TO ERA!

// September 16th, 2009 // No Comments » // Hott and Raw Exclusives

if problems were music life would be so entertaining – DATZHOTT!

verse-poster_01

HOTT AND RAW EXCLUSIVE!

With an easy Caribbean accent and throwback “Gumby” haircut, singer/songwriter/producer Maurice “VERSE” SIMMONDS is an unusual figure in American R&B. Even though his debut album, “Stories of a Bachelor”, is full of typical rhythm and blues sensuality.  Verse is still somewhat of an anomaly to the R&B genre. In fact, his sound is so different he invented a word for it. “Island B,” which is Verse’s unique blend of R&B, Hip-Hop, and Caribbean sounds.

In this HOTT AND RAW EXCLUSIVE!, Verse explains his style of music and his need for wanting people to have an absolute feel for him as an artist.

After LISTENING TO THE INTERVIEW ABOVE! Check below for the latest links, videos, and downloads for Verse.

WHATs HOTT!!! ABOUT VERSE!?!

His perfect blend of uniqueness and creativity!

Born in Puerto Rico but raised in St. Thomas, Verse was first introduced to music through the radio. “I remember being 3 or 4 years old in the back of a car singing along to Ralph Tresvant’s ‘Sensitivity,’” recalls Simmonds, who would steal his mom’s mixtapes and bring them to pre-school for show-and-tell. “In the Virgin Islands, only Top 40 songs make it on the airwaves, so as a kid, I was influenced by some of the biggest songs in the world. To me, music always felt natural.”

verse_01

In high school, Verse would perform in local talent shows with a group of fellow singers – his friends Iggy, Pressure, and Theron. They called themselves 2 Xtreme and would sing for hire for Valentine’s Day lovers or at special events. “Basically, anywhere we could touch a mic,” says Verse.

After graduating from high school, Verse moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL, where he met a young producer/songwriter/engineer named Shama Joseph. The two hit it off immediately and formed the production team, the Jugganauts. In 2003, they moved to Los Angeles to work on several major label projects. A few years later, a phone call from childhood friend Theron Thomas and his brother Timothy Thomas – a.k.a. the singing/songwriting duo, “Rock City” – convinced the Jugganauts to relocate to Atlanta, where they began working with the likes of Akon and super-producer Rodney Jerkins.
“Most of the male records that we would write, I found myself recording the demo for those particular records, and when we played them, people would ask, ‘Who’s the artist?’” says Verse. “Theron and Sham would always jokingly say, ‘That’s Verse, and we’re working on his solo project next.’”

verse_02

However, Verse began taking the idea of a singing career seriously. He started recording his own songs and performing around Atlanta. Jerkins caught wind of Verse’s music and, after attending one of his shows, approached Verse about signing him to his Darkchild Records imprint. A meeting with Interscope Records chairman Jimmy Iovine was set up, and after playing a few songs for the label exec, Verse had a record deal.

Now, Verse is proud to unveil, Stories of a Bachelor, a collection of “based on a true story” scenarios penned almost entirely by the real-life bachelor himself. “Pretty much every song has a story that you can visualize and relate to when you hear it,” he explains. “Of course, some of the lyrics are from my personal experiences, and at times, it’s a little edgier than regular R&B. But I wanted the album to have a storyline…sort of like a movie.”

verse_03

The first single off the album is “Buy You A Round (Up & Down),” a carefree, radio-friendly party anthem. “Money In My Pocket,” a harder Hip-Hop boast, is a noticeable departure from Verse’s usually relaxed demeanor. “People might not expect this song from me, but I don’t want to be an artist locked into one thing,” he says. “I try to be as versatile as I can.”

“That Girl” is a contagious Soca romp, while the RedOne-produced “Boomerang” mixes island-boy style with the electricity of Euro-pop. Then, on “Substitute Lover,” Verse’s striking falsetto issues a warning to fellas everywhere: “If you are not tending to your girl, someone else gladly will.”

Perhaps the most compelling song on Stories of a Bachelor is the remorseful yet sexy ballad, “I’m Sorry.” “It’s a timeless record,” Verse says. “It’s for all the f&*k up days that men have. They can play the song and their women will forgive them instantly!”

Verse captures a range of emotions on Stories of a Bachelor – from lust to longing, hubris to heartache – but still keeps the music fresh. Indeed, he may be unusual to R&B, but Verse Simmonds stands out among the competition just by being himself.

ALL-4-ONE! THE SECRETS! TO LONGEVITY!

// September 14th, 2009 // No Comments » // Hott and Raw Exclusives

if the value of friendship equals the key to success, the value of knowing our enemy is priceless - DATZHOTT!

ALL-4-ONE!-POSTER_04

HOTT AND RAW EXCLUSIVES!

From the early to the mid-’90s, a plethora of harmony groups – both male and female – dominated the pop and urban airwaves. The sound of four voices blended together was almost a throwback to decades earlier when classic Motown teams like The Temptations, The Miracles and The Four Tops ruled creating timeless music that still resonates today.

In an ever-changing music marketplace, many of those ’90s groups simply didn’t survive but there were a few exceptions: the Los Angeles-based team of Tony Borowiak, Jamie Jones, Delious Kennedy, and Alfred Nevarez, known collectively as ALL-4-ONE were fortunate in having established a very strong international following by virtue of major hits such as their revival of The Tymes 1963 classic “So Much In Love,” a 1994 chart-topping single and a cover of the country hit, “ I Swear” (one of the longest-running #1 singles in Billboard’s history) which earned them a 1994 Grammy Award as Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.

In this HOTT AND RAW EXCLUSIVE!, All-4-One talks with DATZHOTT! about the secrets to their longevity and reasons why they haven’t release an album in the U.S. within the last fifteen years.

After LISTENING TO THE INTERVIEW ABOVE, check below for the latest video and links to All-4-One’s website and social media pages.

Their progressive stride towards longevity!

As a result, All-4-One – who achieved multi-platinum status with their 1994 debut self-titled album (recorded in just five weeks) and whose accolades include an American Music Award, Blockbuster Award and numerous international equivalents – has spent much of the last fifteen years consistently touring, performing and recording outside the U.S., particularly in Asia where they’ve become virtual household names, appearing in The Philippines, Malaysia, Korea, Thailand and Japan several times each year.

Now with the release of No Regrets, their debut album on Peak Records (September 15, 2009), All-4-One are focused once again on the U.S. market, mindful that this new sumptuous collection of pop and soul will also find favor with their global fans. The majestic opening cut “Key To Your Heart” and the inspiring “Day Life Began” are reminiscent of the kind of tunes that initially propelled the group to chart-topping status while the upbeat “Regret” has all the immediacy of a hit-bound radio and club friendly groove.

For good measure, All-4-One revive ’90s female group For Real’s “Don’t Know Nothin’” as an acappella treat that is a show-stopping album highlight; while the beautifully harmonic “My Child,” with its potent subject matter (addressing the issue of children who are caught in the middle of husband-and-wife divorces and break ups) is one of the many standouts on No Regrets.

Produced by the group’s Jamie Jones and his production team (The Heavyweights, whose credits include work with 2Pac, European hitmaker Anastacia, Pussycat Dolls, Peak Records’ Wayne Brady, Destiny’s Child’s Michelle Williams and winners in Britain’s “X Factor” TV show), No Regrets – their first U.S. release in seven years – represents a welcome return for All-4-One. Group member Delious notes, “It’s all about timing: sometimes you have to lay low and then resurface as the market goes through different musical phases. We feel there’s a shift back to real music,” and Jamie adds, “it was just time to do it! We got the itch to make a new record and the situation with Peak felt right…”

The album’s creative direction focuses on three parts, as Jamie explains: “There’s the classic pop sound for which we’re known, a more contemporary side and then songs that reflect our love for old school R&B.” The handclappin’ “I Luv That Girl,” the catchy “Good Start” and the soulful “Old Fashion Lovin’” typify the latter while “Go” is an obvious dance cut that may surprise loyal All-4-One fans who know the group for beautiful ballads like “If Your Heart’s Not In It.” A musically diverse platform for the quartet’s vocal skills, No Regrets also includes the midtempo “If Sorry Never Comes” which Jamie (who co-wrote the song with Delious) explains “is all about a guy with a conscience! We’re always looking for a way to be original in the songs we write, to say something lyrically in a different way.”

The team began working on No Regrets last fall: “We put our elbow grease and tears into making this a classic album, front to back” and says Delious, “We really feel this is our best record to date. For instance, a song like “My Child” means a great deal to us because it comes from a very real place. I came up with the idea and my goal is that people will hear the song and it will change how they relate to their children.” The finger-snappin’ “Don’t Know Nothin’” will remind listeners of early Take 6 tracks, an outstanding showcase for the intricate harmonies that distinguished All-4-One from many of their ’90s competitors. “That’s not an easy song, it’s intricate with all its moving parts and vocal gymnastics,” Delious shares, “but we think it turned out really well.” In contrast, the foot-tappin’ “Blowin’ Me Up” has an insistent groove and Jamie describes it as “our European song – a mixture of (Brit soul star) Estelle meets (Brit funk/R&B man) Jamiroquai meets Michael Jackson!”

With their unique sound – derived from the distinctly different sound that each singer possesses (from Tony’s high tenor and Alfred’s true bass blended with the gospel-rooted vocals of lead singers Jamie and Delious) – All-4-One’s latest album has all the elements that first brought All-4-One international popularity in the ’90s – with chart hits like “I Can Love You Like That” (a Top 5 pop and chart-topping Adult Contemporary single), “She’s Got Skillz,” ”Beautiful As U” and “Someday” – along with production values that are decidedly 2009. “We’ve been really blessed, staying friends, working together for the last fifteen years,” says Jamie. “We know that we wouldn’t have a career anywhere if we hadn’t started out here at home, in the U.S. That set us up for what we’ve been able to do throughout the world.” Now, says Delious, “Our voices are stronger, our harmonies are better, our showmanship has developed as a result of all the touring and performing we’ve done outside the U.S. Now we’re ready to have renewed success in our home country – and take this album all around the world!”

JAICKO! THE SOUND! THE FUSION!

if LIFE was as simple as MUSIC we would ALL live forever - DATZHOTT!

HOTT AND RAW EXCLUSIVE!

In looking at JAICKO, doubt seems a foreign concept. In hearing his music, it’s a word utterly stricken from the lexicon. He’s concocted an intoxicating island brew that washes over the listener as readily as a Caribbean swell. Leading the charge is “Oh Yeah,” an effervescent anthem boasting an infectious hook and Jaicko’s tongue-in-cheek sensibilities. The bouncing beat + Jaicko’s lightly-lilted vocals = this song is a no-doubter.

In this HOTT AND RAW EXCLUSIVE, Jaicko chops it up with DATZHOTT! about his style of music and seeing himself as an artist 20 years from now.

After LISTENING TO THE ABOVE INTERVIEW, check below for the latest video and links to Jaicko’s social media pages.

WHATs HOTT!!! ABOUT JAICKO!?!

His undying of insight!

“When I started to grow my hair and I got expelled from school, I knew that music was going to be my future. I thought ‘This is what I have to do now’ because I just sacrificed my education. School in Barbados is very different than in the United States because we were a British colony; you wear a uniform, your hair has to be a certain length. When I stepped out to do this that’s when I started to take music really seriously. I knew my hair would be a big part of my image. I knew there was no going back.”

It’s an intriguing tale, the rebel with a cause. But 17-year-old Jaicko [pronounced Jay-ko], has long been the author of his own destiny. Though he’s matter-of-fact about his forthcoming album on Capitol Records –“It’s life through the eyes of a 17-year-old”– this is an artist with a lot to say.

In fact, the native of Barbados is very much culling the classic American story: an immigrant who comes to our shores armed only with the best intents and an idea he believes has currency. The plan: “Caribbean-infused music: it’s a bit of Barbados brought to America. Music fans will want to listen to me all day. Caribbean fans will want to listen to me all day.” In this vein, Jaicko is a far cry from the current wave of teenybopper talents; no skin-deep musical charlatan, he writes and produces much of his own music. He and his father Phillip, a longtime nightclub musician in Barbados, comprise a formidable songwriting duo.

“My dad has always been a good friend, and a creative partner, so it’s never really been difficult to work as a father and son team,” Jaicko notes. “We write a lot of our songs together; most of the songs that got me my deal were songs we wrote and produced.” Indeed, under Phillip’s tutelage, Jaicko has been performing on stage since the tender age of nine. Yes, nine. And recording in studios since age ten. So while a 17-year-old’s gripes about the struggles inherent in the music industry may at first warrant a sidelong glance, further inspection reveals an earnest and unfazed artist.

“Around that time I was actually rapping,” he reveals. “I always knew I could sing but I never took it seriously. Back then, if you were a rapper, you couldn’t be a singer. That’s changing now though.” Jaicko first stepped onto the stage at a club called the Ship In, one of many establishments lining the famed St. Lawrence Gap, a hub of Barbadian culture and nightlife. Response was instant and unilateral. Jaicko went on to cut an independent album that sold 6,000 copies islandwide—“a good number,” he reminds, “considering our population is under 300,000 people.” Jaicko scaled the nation’s two Top 40 radio stations, “sandwiched between Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z,” he jokes. He opened for Ne-Yo when the latter made a tour stop in Barbados. Jaicko has also been nominated for numerous Barbados Music Awards, including five last year, often pitted in the same category as breakout Barbadian Rihanna.

Indeed, the island queen has quickly become the face of the small Caribbean nation. And her exploits are respected both home and abroad: “We were always seen as apart from the rest of the world,” Jaicko asserts. “It almost seemed impossible for a Barbadian artist to get a record deal. I was pursuing this before Rihanna, but seeing her success made me believe more I could do it, it removed whatever doubt was there.”
