Dreux Pierre Frederic aka LIL’ FIZZ broke onto the pop scene in 2002 as a member of the R&B boy band B2K, whose single “Uh Huh” helped propel their eponymous debut album to the top of the charts. The group, which included Raz-B (DeMario Thornton), J-Boog (Jarrell Houston) and Omarion (Omari Grandberry), went on to have equal success with their second album, Pandemonium! (2002). They then appeared in the 2004 feature film You Got Served, in which Lil’ Fizz played Rashann. The movie featured music by B2K and was seen as another step toward superstardom (it was written and directed by the band’s manager, Chris Stokes), but the band broke up shortly before the film was released. Lil’ Fizz and J-Boog went on to form Fizz & Boog, Inc. (FBI).

In this exclusive interview with DATZHOTT! , former B2K boy band member LIL’ FIZZ talks about his new record label and possibilities of the group reuniting for another album.

From the moment Jagged Edge stepped onto the scene in 1997 with voices like silk mixed with the ruggedness of the dirty south they created a lane in R&B music that no other group can master. Born in Washington DC and schooled in Maryland, David was always an outsider who never fit in to any crowd. From the first day ADAIR met Frequency, they had instant chemistry. The rest is history:

The question of whether music has the ability to save lives is answered through a very compelling story about a group of New York City teens who embark on a unique journey of self-discovery as they dare to reach for their dreams. Inspired by a formerly homeless teenager named Kazi, the young people struggle to write music about the tough issues affecting their lives. Over the next four years, they overcome daunting obstacles to produce a powerful and thought-provoking album, recorded in a studio donated by Willis and hip hop mogul Russell Simmons. Winner of 16 film festivals this critically acclaimed film is a lasting legacy to the teens’ transformation through the power of hope and healing.

Exemplification Of The True Power Of Music!

Shot over the course of four years, Scott K. Rosenberg and Matt Ruskin’s documentary about the development of a nonprofit program that uses music to keep troubled teenagers on the straight and narrow follows a familiar uplifting paradigm. But the story is compelling enough that even glib phrases like “healing through hip-hop” can’t drag it down.

Christopher “Kazi” Rolle was abandoned by his mother in their native Bahamas and, after passing through a series of orphanages and foster homes, made his way to New York as a teenager to find her. Their reunion went badly and he wound up homeless in Brooklyn, later finding refuge in Art Start, a program founded by codirector Rosenberg and a group of artists in 1991 with the goal of using the arts to empower at-risk teens and teach them skills that would help them rise above poverty, fractured families, street violence, drugs and a pervasive culture of despair. Kazi is a success story: Not only did Art Start give Kazi focus and purpose, but it inspired him to propose a new program in 1999. After getting the go-ahead, Kazi papered Brooklyn with flyers offering aspiring rappers the opportunity to collaborate on an album, then handpicked several teens to participate. He tells them he doesn’t want to hear derivative rhymes about thug life: He wants them to write about their lives. The stars of the group soon prove to be Diana “Princess” Lemon, who wants desperately to make more of her life than her parents did of theirs but has gotten pregnant and is messing up at school, and Christopher “Cannon” Mapp, who lost his mother to a slow death from multiple sclerosis and whose remaining family is now in danger of being evicted from their apartment. In between working with his fledgling performers, Kazi scrambles to find donors to keep the project afloat, eventually coming to the attention of Bruce Willis and Def Jam CEO Russell Simmons, who donates studio services that make the Hip Hop Project album a reality.

June of 2009 – Freeway confirmed a deal with Cash Money Records, and the start of his own label, Free Money. November 13, 2009 — Freeway releases “The Beat Made Me Do It” mixtape which featured production by Jake One with assistance by Don Cannon to officially announce his 2010 Rhymesayers debut album “The Stimulus Package”.

December 1, 2009 – Rhymesayers and Freeway leaked the first official track and video, “Know What I Mean” off of The Stimulus Package.

February 16, 2010 – Freeway stimulates the Hip Hop industry with the release of his long awaited album.

The Gift Of Storytelling!

Born in Atlanta and raised in Miami,  Duece has a lyrical gift for storytelling, utilizing Miami’s classic sound of hard-hitting, bass-thumping beats. He first gained notice when he wrote the hook for Trick Daddy’s “Shut Up” and consequently became in-house scribe for Slip N Slide, conjuring hooks for Trina and Rick Ross. From there, he’s been featured on movie soundtracks for Blade 2, Any Given Sunday, and Drumline as well as top selling games such as NBA Live and EA Sports Active.

He is thankful and appreciative for all of his music mentors that have been instrumental in his growth. As a result, Duece Poppi is now comfortable spreading his creative wings on his own terms. A quick look at his resume will show that he’s helped pen the hooks on East Coast favorites such as Trina’s “Pull Over,” Trick Daddy’s “Shut Up,” and Rick Ross’“Bring that Gangsta Sh*t Back” featuring Birdman.

Duece Poppi emerged from the city’s violent ghettos with a lyrical gift for storytelling on Miami’s hard hitting, bass-thumping tracks. After working his way into Trick Daddy’s crew, Duece finally snagged an opportunity to work with his idol—by hustle, of course. The agile 19-year-old bribed the sound engineer in an effort to get on a song Trick Daddy recorded earlier that day. After overhearing Duece spit, Trick was impressed with Duece’s style and wordplay. He quickly put Duece to work at Slip N Slide Records and the rest, as they say, is history. Deuce promptly found himself co-writing on the smash hit, “Shut Up” where the opportunity to write on a hit record with an idol is one that most protégées wait their entire careers for. Since then, Duece has been incessantly writing hooks and songs while producing music for his Afro-Punk-fusion group, The Needles (featured on his music label, Rebel Music).

It’s no easy feat to churn out a run of eclectic and varying tunes to suit Gangsta Rap followers, hipsters, Miami bangers, college kids and “conscious” Hip-Hop heads, but Duece Poppi manages to do so almost effortlessly. He’s propelled his style into national Top 40 countdowns through remixes such as Madcon’s international hit “Beggin,” Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi,” and 30H!3 “Don’t Trust Me” with Kid Cudi. Even with penning hooks for various megastars while producing buzz worthy remixes, Duece Poppi doesn’t miss a beat with releasing his first single, “My White Friends,” off his debut LP tentatively titled Animal House.

Psychedelic 60’s rock and 70’s soul music are Duece’s influences. He’s inspired by Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, George Clinton and even The Commodores. On Animal House you’ll get to sample his creative collaborations and unique sound. He is a self proclaimed “music lover,” who hopes to change the presentation of Rap music, while remaining true to his Miami roots; an admirable trait he’s always respected Trick Daddy for.

An early adaption to destiny!

That Carmen’s so far along creatively at such a young age is not surprising when one considers that this iTunes-era blue-eyed soul singer began playing piano and flute in early childhood, earned a place in the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain at 11, and at 16 was admitted to the celebrated Brit School (which has also nurtured Adele, Leona Lewis, Amy Winehouse and Imogen Heap).

Born and raised in London, Carmen thinks she may have inherited her facility for piano from her paternal grandfather, an accomplished player who died before she was born. She began private piano and flute lessons at age seven. “My parents didn’t have to push me to practice,” she says. “I loved it.” Her presence as a flautist in the National Children’s Orchestra ensured plentiful performance opportunities. It was also during this period that her drive and professionalism began to emerge.

Not that she didn’t know how to cut loose. Carmen studied dance on the weekends for years, including ballet and tap. When she wasn’t corralling her fellow students into video-style extravaganzas, Carmen could be found at the piano.

Vocal inspiration came from Toni, Mariah, Whitney and Céline, as well as Boyz II Men and Michael Bolton. Carmen’s real breakout as a creative force, however, coincided with her entry into the Brit Performing Arts & Technology School.

On her own, meanwhile, Carmen earned U.K. radio support for the track “How Freaky Can You Get”, even performing it live on the BBC’s Radio 1 for a national listening audience. She subsequently made waves with the song “You Got Me”, the video for which enjoyed widespread circulation.

Then she reconnected with Feist, whom she’d met shortly after her graduation from The Brit School.

She looks forward to playing these new songs for fans, knowing the shared experience will imbue them with even greater electricity.

WHAT’s HOTT!!! ABOUT LLOYD!?!

A self-inspired advancement in solidarity!

As a child, Lloyd Polite Jr. fell in love with performing. As a student at the prestigious Atlanta-based DeKalb School of the Arts, it was clear he’d found his calling. After catching the attention of former Klymaxx-member-turned-talent-manager Joyce Irby at the tender age of ten and wetting his professional feet via a stint with the kiddy group N-Toon, the dynamic performer known to music fans today simply as Lloyd eventually signed with Irv Gotti’s The Inc. Records and has been nurturing a solid career ever since.

Lloyd was only 18 years old when he made his major mark on the music scene with the release of his 2004 debut CD, South Side, which spawned the Top 20 Ashanti collabo of the same name. In the years that followed, Lloyd has proven himself as a legitimate industry player, generating hits like 2006’s chart-topping “You” and the infectious “Get It Shawty,” which saw top two placement last year. Both hit singles were featured on his gold-selling sophomore disc, Street Love.

In August 2008, Lloyd returned with his third effort, Lessons In Love, which featured the hit single, “Girls Around the World” with Lil Wayne. The irresistible laid back track which samples Eric B & Rakim’s “Paid In Full”, was co-produced by Lloyd along with his Street Love crew, Jasper Cameron & Reese. The Hype Williams-directed music video was a futuristic, sexy clip that topped the BET “106 & Park” countdown, once again solidifying Lloyd amongst the R&B elite.

Lloyd recently released a follow up to Lessons In Love, a mixtape titled Lessons In Love 2.0, which is currently available for free download at www.younggoldie.com. The project features new music as well as a host of unreleased and remixed songs from his previous album. A star-studded line up of guest appearances including The Dream, Fabolous, Plies, Nelly, and Yung Joc is sure to make 2.0 a must have mixtape for Lloyd fans and music lovers alike.

Enjoying his independence for now, Lloyd plans to partner with another major and finalize plans to release his yet untitled fourth studio album in 2010. “We’ve already begun working with Jim Jonsin, Cool & Dre, Rico Love, Rodney Jerkins and others,” he says. Lloyd added that he is eager to break new ground and explore opportunities that will take his career to the next level and supply his fans with more great music. To that end, he has spent most of 2009 traveling abroad, staging performances in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Aside from his touring, and the recording of his EP and album, Lloyd has kept busy with features for Juelz Santana, Ghostface, and, most recently, for Young Money on their new single “Bedrock”.

In addition to being a successful artist, Lloyd has also launched his own label, Young Goldie Music and prides himself on his community involvement, participating in a variety of charitable camaigns, including rapper David Banner’s Heal the Hood Benefit Concert, Usher’s New Look Foundation, and Dallas Austin Save the Music Project. Following the examples set by his peers; Lloyd plans to launch his own community organization in 2010 that will focus on providing positive role models for fatherless children. “Growing up without a father is a pain that I can personally relate too. I want to help fill that void in someone else’s life”, explains Lloyd.

With a successful recording career, business savvyness and a connection to the community, Lloyd is one young person on which youth has clearly not been wasted.

In this day-and-age singers with real vocal talent confronts a challenge of connecting through natural pitched voices and music. R&B has been saturated with a style of futuristic music production and vocal enhancement software, the true talent of an artist’s voice can be hidden.

The outward expressions of her inner-soul!

Life for a woman is anything but easy, that’s why South Bronx, New York native Shonie got an early start in her music career. At the tender age of nine years old, the young singer and her family moved to Miami, Florida and forged ahead towards a new scenery and outlook on life. During Shonie and her families shift to South Florida; her mother recognized her daughters budding vocal talent.

“My mom was heavily involved in the church, so it was only right that I join the church choir. It was at that time that my mom noticed my ability to carry a note. She then began to have me sing in front of different people to see if they would get the same reaction as she had after listening to me sing at church and around the house, and they all had the same response by saying, “That girl can SANG!!!” I had written my first song when I was 9 years old and finally got the chance to record it when my mom arranged for me to go into a real studio.” Inserts Shonie.

Immediately after moving to Miami, the young doe–eyed songstress began her longtime journey as a singer. At the age of 17, Shonie.  was offered a recording deal with an independent record label in Miami named “South Beat Records”. It was there that she met her manager James Jackson of Slick Salt Entertainment, who released her nationally distributed mix tape, which was hosted by the infamous DJ Khaled. The female vocalist originally came onto the music scene as a rapper. “I have the gift to be versatile, so I plan on showing both sides.” As any aspiring vocalist/songwriter/rapper would do, Shonie kept her musical goals at hand. To date she has worked with the likes of various nationwide celebrities including Hip-Hop Superstar Trina, on the tracks such as “Wish I never Met You”, Flo Rida, B5, Trick Daddy, Cool & Dre and various others.

The inventive singer does not mind sharing her thoughts, secrets, or emotions to the world through her music. “I want to touch people all over the world with not only my vocal abilities, but my truth which is birthed through my lyrics. I want to be known as the popular songstress that is respected and successful for my sincerity that is displayed through my music.”

Drawing inspiration from artist such as Beyonce, Aaliyah, Missy Elliot, and most importantly Betty Wright; Shonie is definitely setting the bar high for her music fans to appreciate her individual sound and craft. “Betty Wright was one of the main reasons I started singing. I was very young when I first heard her sing, but her voice and her swagger were just incredible! I think that’s where I got my confidence and swagger from. I also loved her delivery on her vocals. Shonie inserts in an earnest tone. When asked about future goals and objectives surrounding her career, Shonie states that she “plans on branding herself as one of the greatest female entertainers that has ever blessed a microphone in this industry.”

In the journey of this long road we call life; everyone has to have an alternative motive, or great theory. Shonie’s great theories consist of nothing more than making great music.

Their blossoming career!

Vistoso Bosses, comprised of Taylah.P and Kelci, is a high-energy girl group with infectious lyrics and sweet moves to match. “Our music is unique and eclectic, mixed with a little hip-hop,” explains rapper Kelci. Taylah.P, who sings vocals, further expands upon the group’s sound. “We have a new sound. We’re influenced by everyday teen stuff – school, boys, and having fun.”

Both are careful to explain that Vistoso Bosses is a strong concoction of music and image. Their witty personalities accompanied by a multihued fashion sense, makes them an easy eye catcher to tweens and teens alike.

Vistoso, defined as bright or colorful in the Spanish language, is the perfect adjective for the brilliant twosome. “Anybody can be vistoso,” says Kelci, “We’re all about having our own style.” Taylah.P excitedly agrees, “Most people think we’re all about not matching, but it’s about being yourself. We like being colorful. We wear what we feel.”

Kelci is quick to expand upon her state of bliss as the group celebrates being labelmates with Soulja Boy, Collipark Music’s most successful artist to date. “It feels great to be on one of the hottest record labels out.” Michael “Mr. Collipark” Crooms was introduced to the group by means of the Internet’s social networking magic.

The girls’ homemade videos to their popular debut songs “Delirious” and “Boy Crazy” were instant faves on YouTube and Myspace. “[Delirious] is a happy song,” says Taylah who details how the track came about. “We wrote the song along with St. James, a very talented producer.”

The group has since received the Myspace Artist of the Week accolade due to an overwhelming response from almost one-half million online fans. Mr. Collipark is enthusiastic about the debut of the self-proclaimed Bosses. “These girls are a breath of fresh air for the music industry. They’re positive, bright, and just all around creative,” describes the industry veteran responsible for the recent record-breaking success of Soulja Boy reaching the highest number of digital downloads ever in the history of music.

His assessment of the two as a teen girl-power group makes room for the pair to be artistically free of today’s misogynistic driven culture. “We want to be viewed as role models,” Taylah wholeheartedly explains. “We want to be an inspiration and positive light for girls of all ages.” Their melodious vocals and lovable look make this goal easy to achieve. “Don’t be afraid to be yourself,” both girls advise, “Being different is being cool.”

With an easy Caribbean accent and throwback “Gumby” haircut, singer/songwriter/producer Maurice “VERSE” SIMMONDS is an unusual figure in American R&B. Even though his debut album, “Stories of a Bachelor”, is full of typical rhythm and blues sensuality.  Verse is still somewhat of an anomaly to the R&B genre. In fact, his sound is so different he invented a word for it. “Island B,” which is Verse’s unique blend of R&B, Hip-Hop, and Caribbean sounds.

His perfect blend of uniqueness and creativity!

Born in Puerto Rico but raised in St. Thomas, Verse was first introduced to music through the radio. “I remember being 3 or 4 years old in the back of a car singing along to Ralph Tresvant’s ‘Sensitivity,’” recalls Simmonds, who would steal his mom’s mixtapes and bring them to pre-school for show-and-tell. “In the Virgin Islands, only Top 40 songs make it on the airwaves, so as a kid, I was influenced by some of the biggest songs in the world. To me, music always felt natural.”

In high school, Verse would perform in local talent shows with a group of fellow singers – his friends Iggy, Pressure, and Theron. They called themselves 2 Xtreme and would sing for hire for Valentine’s Day lovers or at special events. “Basically, anywhere we could touch a mic,” says Verse.

After graduating from high school, Verse moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL, where he met a young producer/songwriter/engineer named Shama Joseph. The two hit it off immediately and formed the production team, the Jugganauts. In 2003, they moved to Los Angeles to work on several major label projects. A few years later, a phone call from childhood friend Theron Thomas and his brother Timothy Thomas – a.k.a. the singing/songwriting duo, “Rock City” – convinced the Jugganauts to relocate to Atlanta, where they began working with the likes of Akon and super-producer Rodney Jerkins.
“Most of the male records that we would write, I found myself recording the demo for those particular records, and when we played them, people would ask, ‘Who’s the artist?’” says Verse. “Theron and Sham would always jokingly say, ‘That’s Verse, and we’re working on his solo project next.’”

However, Verse began taking the idea of a singing career seriously. He started recording his own songs and performing around Atlanta. Jerkins caught wind of Verse’s music and, after attending one of his shows, approached Verse about signing him to his Darkchild Records imprint. A meeting with Interscope Records chairman Jimmy Iovine was set up, and after playing a few songs for the label exec, Verse had a record deal.

Now, Verse is proud to unveil, Stories of a Bachelor, a collection of “based on a true story” scenarios penned almost entirely by the real-life bachelor himself. “Pretty much every song has a story that you can visualize and relate to when you hear it,” he explains. “Of course, some of the lyrics are from my personal experiences, and at times, it’s a little edgier than regular R&B. But I wanted the album to have a storyline…sort of like a movie.”

The first single off the album is “Buy You A Round (Up & Down),” a carefree, radio-friendly party anthem. “Money In My Pocket,” a harder Hip-Hop boast, is a noticeable departure from Verse’s usually relaxed demeanor. “People might not expect this song from me, but I don’t want to be an artist locked into one thing,” he says. “I try to be as versatile as I can.”

“That Girl” is a contagious Soca romp, while the RedOne-produced “Boomerang” mixes island-boy style with the electricity of Euro-pop. Then, on “Substitute Lover,” Verse’s striking falsetto issues a warning to fellas everywhere: “If you are not tending to your girl, someone else gladly will.”

Perhaps the most compelling song on Stories of a Bachelor is the remorseful yet sexy ballad, “I’m Sorry.” “It’s a timeless record,” Verse says. “It’s for all the f&*k up days that men have. They can play the song and their women will forgive them instantly!”

Verse captures a range of emotions on Stories of a Bachelor – from lust to longing, hubris to heartache – but still keeps the music fresh. Indeed, he may be unusual to R&B, but Verse Simmonds stands out among the competition just by being himself.
