in loving memory

Fantasia Barrino says, “Such obvious pain. So much outpouring of love.”

By John Charles Reedburg

This is such a tragic ordeal. But at least, friends and love ones are there for support.

Over 200 people mourned with JENNIFER HUDSON Monday at the Apostolic Church of God in Chicago as her mother, brother and nephew were laid to rest.

When the three-hour service concluded, a horse-drawn carriage led the procession to the Oak Woods Cemetery, where Hudson’s family was buried. According to E! News, Oprah Winfrey, Usher, Queen Latifah, Patti LaBelle and other well-known names came to offer Hudson their condolences. Former Idol Fantasia Barrino even sang the gospel classic “Your Grace and Mercy,” which she dedicated to “my family,” the Hudsons.

Hudson understandably took time to say goodbye to each of her relatives, stopping to kiss her mother during the service.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley were also reportedly on hand, to show support and deliver eulogies and scripture readings.

“Such obvious pain. So much outpouring of love. People’s support — Fantasia and others were there just to show love and support,” Rev. Jesse Jackson told reporters after the ceremony.

When the three-hour service concluded, a horse-drawn carriage led the procession to the Oak Woods Cemetery, where Hudson’s family was buried.

Hudson’s mother Darnell Donerson, 57; brother Jason Hudson, 29; and nephew Julian all died of multiple gunshot wounds last month.

The investigation into the shootings is ongoing, but William Balfour, Julian’s father, remains in custody and has been named a person of interest.

POLICE LINKS GUN IN HUDSON SLAYING

how much is enough

“[William Balfour] had a troubled path”

By John Charles Reedburg

It’s only a moment away that fully link this monster to this terrible thing. Even the mug shot of this creep is disturbing.

Chicago, IL — Forensic testing determined that the chrome-and-black .45-caliber pistol recovered by police was the weapon used to kill Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew, a law-enforcement source said Friday.

The gun, discovered Wednesday a block from where 7-year-old JULIAN KING’s body was found, was being tested in the hope of finding evidence that would tie the killings to a suspect, police said.

Police also are investigating whether the weapon had once belonged to Hudson’s slain brother, Jason. He allegedly owned an identical gun that he thought was stolen from the family’s Englewood home a few months ago, according to law-enforcement sources and several neighbors.

The .45-caliber Sig Sauer semiautomatic pistol was recovered in the bushes of a vacant lot on the West Side, a block from where the nephew’s body was found Monday in an SUV.

Police immediately suspected it was the gun used in the killings because the unfired bullets matched the make and model of shell casings found at the Hudson family home, where the two other victims were slain, sources said.

WILLIAM BALFOUR, the estranged husband of Hudson’s sister Julia, remains in custody after being questioned in the case, but he has not been charged in the slayings.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had traced the recovered gun to its original owner in Michigan, who reported it stolen, sources said.

While police have investigated the slayings as possible domestic violence, they have not ruled out other motives.

Jason Hudson was shot in the leg several months ago in Gary but refused to seek medical attention, friends and family members said. The wound limited his mobility and forced him to use a cane to walk.

“He had a troubled path,” said his second cousin Joe Buckner. “He was trying to get his life figured out.”

BREAKING NEWS: POLICE CONFIRMED BODY IS HUDSON’s NEPHEW

an innocent life wasted

By John Charles Reedburg

So sad.

Chicago police have confirmed the harrowing news. The body of a young boy found in an abandoned SUV is in fact that of Jennifer Hudson’s 7-year-old nephew, JULIAN KING.

“Tragically, search efforts ended shortly after 7 a.m.,” Police Superintendent Jody Weis said at a press conference this afternoon in Chicago.

“At this time, we can confirm that the body located inside the vehicle was the body of 7-year-old Julian King. The vehicle was towed and taken in…for forensic processing.”

The announcement came shortly after Jennifer Hudson, accompanied by family members, viewed the remains—the second time in three days the Oscar winner has had to make the grim trip to the morgue, having previously identified her slain mother and brother.

An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday. A police spokeswoman said that Julian was shot multiple times, but Weis said those details were being left to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office to report.

“Today a family and a community are grieving, but we want them to take comfort in knowing that Chicago police and detectives will continue to work around the clock to ensure that justice is served,” Weis said, also thanking the Illinois State Police and FBI for their time and efforts.

“The Hudson family members are also a key partner in this investigation, cooperating with detectives every step of the way under stressful and very painful circumstances.”

Julian, the son of Hudson’s sister, Julia Hudson, was reported missing shortly after a relative discovered the bodies of the actress’ mother, 57-year-old Darnell Donerson, and her older brother, 29-year-old Jason Hudson, Friday afternoon in Donerson’s Englewood home. Each had been shot to death.

FBI agents this morning located the white 1994 Chevrolet Suburban that Julian was believed to have been taken away in after receiving a call at 7:06 a.m. about a suspicious parked vehicle in the 1300 block of South Kolin Avenue on Chicago’s West Side.

A body was discovered in the backseat.

“I didn’t look in there. I didn’t touch it. I knew it was a strange vehicle,” area resident John Loudon, whose wife reported the vehicle to police after he saw that its license-plate number matched reports of the SUV police were looking for, told the Chicago Tribune.

“I feel bad about that baby,” he added.

Hudson had offered a $100,000 reward for Julian’s safe return. “Thank you all for your prayers and your calls. Please keep praying for our family and that we get Julian King back home safely. If anyone has any information about his whereabouts, please contact the authorities immediately,” Hudson wrote on her MySpace blog.

William Balfour, Julia Hudson’s estranged husband, has been in police custody since Friday night as a “person of interest.” He has denied involvement in the crime but has since reportedly stopped responding to authorities’ questions. No charges have been filed.

The 27-year-old man was transferred to a state lockup Sunday night for violating his parole. Released in 2006, Balfour spent seven years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted murder and vehicular hijacking. His latest arrest qualifies as a parole violation.

“I think they’re pretty optimistic,” Superintendent Weis said when asked whether authorities expect to solve the crime.

“You’ve got two crime scenes…I’m very confident that our forensic technicians will go through both areas with a fine-toothed comb, and I suspect that we’ll have some evidence that will link us to the killer.”

“We’re following any lead we can get right now,” Weis added. “[Balfour] is a person of interest, but that’s not to say that there is not other individuals that may turn up. Right now, we’re just following the facts we have, we’re following the evidence that we have.”

HUDSON OFFERS REWARD FOR NEPHEWS RETURN

a plea for safe a return

Singer and Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson offered a $100,000 reward for the safe return of 7-year-old Julian King, who has been missing since the shooting deaths last week of her mother and brother.

By John Charles Reedburg

I know that the public will help.

Chicago, IL — Oscar-winning actress JENNIFER HUDSON appealed on Sunday for the public’s help in finding her 7-year-old nephew, missing since the shooting deaths of her mother and brother.

City police transferred custody of the man labeled a “person of interest” in the shooting deaths to state authorities.

An Amber Alert remained in effect Sunday for young Julian King, who disappeared on Friday, the day the bodies of his grandmother, DARNELL DONERSON, 57, and 29-year-old uncle JASON HUDSON were found in the home they all shared on the city’s South Side. The deaths were ruled homicides.

The Amber Alert listed William Balfour, the estranged husband of Jennifer Hudson’s sister, Julia Hudson, as a suspect in a “double homicide investigation.” Julia Hudson is the missing boy’s mother

Chicago police spokeswoman Monique Bond said authorities considered Balfour a “person of interest” in the case but he had not been charged.

Authorities said the search for Julian would be citywide, but on Sunday residents and officers focused their efforts “in the immediate vicinity” of the family’s home in the Englewood section, said police spokesman Dan O’Brien.

Police said they did not have a motive for the killings but called the case “domestic related.”

“There’s a lot of forensic evidence. We have to work the evidence and try and solve this case,” Bond said Sunday. “Most importantly, we want to find the child.”

Bond said no weapon had been found at the Hudson home, a three-story house sandwiched by vacant lots littered with trash. On Sunday, investigators moved in and out of the home and examined the trash.

Police officers were instructed to place fliers with Julian King’s picture and description in every business in the area.

Jennifer Hudson, who won an Academy Award for best supporting actress in 2007 for her role in “Dreamgirls, was in Chicago with her family during the weekend, her sister said. A publicist did not disclose her whereabouts.

In a MySpace blog entry on Sunday, Hudson said she was grateful for community support and posted a picture of her sister’s son.

“Thank you all for your prayers and your calls. Please keep praying for our family and that we get Julian King back home safely,” the blog entry said. “If anyone has any information about his whereabouts please contact the authorities immediately … Once again thank you all for being there for us through this tough time.”

Bond said Balfour, who had been in police custody since Friday, was transferred Sunday to the Illinois Department of Corrections “based on his active parole violation unrelated to this investigation.”

Records from the corrections department show Balfour, 27, is on parole and spent nearly seven years in prison for attempted murder, vehicular hijacking and possessing a stolen vehicle.

Corrections spokeswoman Januari Smith said Balfour would likely remain in state custody until the Illinois Prisoner Review Board looked at his case. She would not say exactly where Balfour was being held.

It was unclear if Balfour had an attorney to speak for him Sunday, but his mother, Michele Balfour, has denied that he was involved the killings or in Julian’s disappearance.

During a public plea Saturday for the boy’s return, Julia Hudson described her son as a smart, sensitive and easygoing child.

“He’s not your typical 7-year-old,” she told a crowd at the family’s Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church on Chicago’s South Side. She was joined by the boy’s father, Greg King.

Hudson said she last saw her son Thursday night when they went out to dinner to celebrate her 31st birthday. Afterward, she said, she took Julian to the home she shared with her mother and brother, handed him to his grandmother and everyone went to sleep.

Julia Hudson said Saturday that she was confident her son was still alive and that she was praying for his return.

“Momma’s looking for you. I’m not going to stop until you come home,” she said.

BARACK OFFERS CONDOLENCE TO JENNIFER HUDSON

a display of true heart

By John Charles Reedburg

I think this definitely demonstrates genuine character.

Democratic presidential candidate BARACK OBAMA has offered his support to Jennifer Hudson after the Oscar-winning actress and singer’s mother and brother were shot dead on Friday.

“Oh, it was heartbreaking,” the Democratic presidential hopeful told “Extra” of hearing the news. “In fact, I’m still trying to get a phone number to call her.”

Obama, who like Hudson is from Chicago where the murders occurred, took time out from campaigning on Saturday to send his condolences.

“Michelle and I were absolutely heartbroken to learn about this unimaginable tragedy, and we want Jennifer and to know that she is in our thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time,” Obama said in a statement. “We also pray for the swift and safe return of her young nephew.”

Hudson sang the national anthem at the Democratic National Convention before Obama accepted the party’s presidential nomination in August.

a quest to reunite a love one

By John Charles Reedburg

Keep up the hope.

(Chicago, IL) JENNIFER HUDSON’s family pleaded Saturday for the return of 7-year-old JULIAN KING, Hudson’s nephew. The boy has been missing since Hudson’s mother and brother were discovered fatally shot Friday.

In the impoverished South Side Chicago neighborhood where singer and actress Jennifer Hudson grew up and which she often credited for her success, her sister Julia Hudson stood fighting back tears and begging for the safe return of her 7-year-old son, Julian.

“All I ask, I don’t care who you are, just let the baby go. Please,” JULIA HUDSON said Saturday before a crowd from the podium of the Pleasant Gift Missionary Baptist Church, where her sister sang as a child. “My biggest fear has already happened. My greatest hope is finding my child.”

With Greg King, the boy’s father, beside her, Julia Hudson expressed her belief that Julian was still alive and added that her brother’s white truck was missing.

“I know he’s out there,” said Julia Hudson, who discovered the bodies of her mother and brother Friday at the family’s Englewood home and soon realized her son was missing. “Just let him go. Put him on the side of the street. He’ll sit there. Somebody will see him. He’ll probably cry until somebody comes along.”

innocence unexcused

Police issued an Amber Alert Friday for a 7-year-old boy missing from the scene of a double murder in Chicago. The victims are the mother and brother of Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson.

By John Charles Reedburg

I’m really hurt about this.

Chicago, IL — The mother and brother of  JENNIFER HUDSON were found shot dead Friday at a South Side home, and police were looking for a missing child who is the nephew of the singer and Oscar-winning actress.

“We can confirm that there is an ongoing investigation concerning the deaths of Jennifer Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson, and her brother, Jason Hudson,” Hudson’s personal publicist, Lisa Kasteler, said in a statement. “No further comment will be made and the family has asked that their privacy be respected at this difficult time.”

Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said the deaths appeared to be the result of domestic abuse. The Cook County medical examiner’s office said autopsies for Donerson, 57, and Jason Hudson, 29, were pending.

Police were talking to “a number of people in custody” on Friday night, said Bond, who declined to elaborate.

Deputy Chief Joseph Patterson said a family member entered the home around 3 p.m. Friday, found a woman shot on the living room floor and left to notify authorities. Responding officers found a man shot in the bedroom, Patterson said. There was no sign of forced entry.
Police tape blocked access to the large, white house, where a crowd gathered outside.

Authorities issued an Amber Alert for 7-year-old Julian King and were seeking a 1994 white Chevrolet Suburban. The child was the grandson of the female victim, Patterson said.

The alert said the child was possibly abducted and could be accompanied by a man named William Balfour — considered armed and dangerous — who was a suspect in the double homicide investigation. Records from the Illinois Department of Corrections show Balfour, 27, who has not been charged with a crime, is on parole and spent nearly seven years in prison for attempted murder, vehicular hijacking and possessing a stolen vehicle.

Public records show one of Balfour’s addresses as the home where Donerson and Jason Hudson were shot.

The two could also be in a teal or green Chrysler Concorde with a temporary license plate, a left front headlight hanging out and scratches on the left side of the vehicle, police said.

The tragedy comes as Hudson, who grew up in Chicago, continues to reach new heights in her career. Her song Spotlight is No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop charts and her recently released, self-tiled debut album has been a top seller. She was featured in this year’s blockbuster Sex and the City movie and is also starring in the hit film The Secret Life of Bees.

She won an Academy Award for best supporting actress in 2007 for her role in Dreamgirls. In an interview last year with Vogue, Hudson credited her mother with encouraging her to audition for American Idol, which launched her career.

The singer, whose father died when she was a teenager, described herself as very close to her family. In a recent AP interview she said her family, which includes older siblings Julia and Jason, helped keep her grounded.

“My faith in God and my family, they’re very realistic and very normal, they’re not into the whole limelight kind of thing, so when I go home to Chicago that’s just another place that’s home,” she said. “I stand in line with everybody else, or, when I go home to my mom I’m just Jennifer, (so she says), ‘You get up and you take care of your own stuff.’ And I love that; I don’t like when people tell you everything you want to hear, I want to hear the truth, you know what I mean.”

Hudson recently announced her engagement to David Otunga, best known for his stint on VH1’s reality show I Love New York.

Hudson’s representatives would not disclose her whereabouts Friday. She had been scheduled to appear Monday in Los Angeles to collect an ensemble cast honor at the Hollywood Awards for The Secret Life of Bees with co-stars including Alicia Keys, Queen Latifah and Dakota Fanning.
